A Spider-Web Kind of Halloween

Every year around this time, our house slowly transforms into a scene straight out of a "friendly" haunted movie. Webs stretch across doorways, dangling spiders lurk from ceiling corners, and the faint smell of pumpkin spice candles mixes with cookie dough. We don’t do “gory scary” around here. Our vibe is more spooky but cute, the kind that makes the kids squeal and laugh at the same time.

It’s officially spider season at our house. 🕷️ The kids think it’s hilarious to sneak little plastic spiders into places they absolutely shouldn’t be. I’ve found them in the cereal box, under couch cushions, and even tucked into my shoe. I’ve fallen for that one more times than I’d like to admit. By the time Halloween rolls around, I’m still finding those little guys hiding until Thanksgiving.

Yet if there’s one thing more entertaining than decorating, it’s costume shopping with kids. You start with grand plans for something coordinated, maybe even a family theme, and somehow end up with a hodgepodge of chaos. One kid’s a vampire, another’s a taco, and someone insists on being a “sparkle ghost princess ninja.” The best part is watching them light up when they finally find the one.

There’s just something about that moment when their imagination takes over, and suddenly they’re not just dressing up. They’re becoming someone new for a night.

However, our absolute favorite part of October nights is when everything’s quiet except the crunch of leaves and giggles echoing down the street. We tell “spooky” stories that are never really scary, like the time on of our kids' motion-sensor toys started talking in the middle of the night or when the doors slam shut in our house by themselves (though it's really just the A/C turning on).

It’s a season of fun, family, and a little bit of mischief. The kind that reminds us to slow down, laugh at the silly stuff, and enjoy being together in all the chaos.

So here’s to spider webs that stick around a little too long, costumes that never quite match, and those perfectly imperfect memories that make Halloween so special.

Because honestly, the best kind of spooky is the kind that brings everyone closer.
